Americans are developing type 2 diabetes at an alarming rate. Type 2 diabetes, also know as adult onset diabetes, is condition that generally develops over time. This condition occurs disproportionately in over weight people who have a poor diet and exercise habits.
Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, works to regulate blood sugar levels in the body. When your blood sugar levels are constantly elevated the pancreas produces more and more insulin to regulate blood sugar levels. Over time the body's response to insulin decreases thus developing insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes). If you are overweight, eat a poor diet and do not exercise you probably have an elevated risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Valentine's Day is just around the corner and it's time to get a gift for your sweetheart. Why not break the mold this year and give that special person a heart healthy gift? Now I am not saying to skip the flowers but let's substitute a heart healthy gift for the chocolates this year. We all want to see that special person healthy and fit, right? So I have compiled a list of some of my favorite heart healthy gifts for February 14th: 1) Make a pledge to each other to take a walk together at least 3 times a week. 2) Enroll yourself and your sweetheart in a healthy cooking class. 3) Join an activity club together i.e. walking, running, bowling (hey, it is a step up from the couch). 4) Buy your partner a heart rate monitor. This device helps one monitor the intensity of their workout. 5) Get a couples massage. Romance, relaxation and reduced tension are great for any relationship. Non-contact boxing has become a popular alternative to the traditional workout. A boxing workout requires minimal equipment and space. All you really need is a jump rope, a set of boxing gloves and some floor space. Boxing improves cardiovascular conditioning, stamina, balance and core strength. You can find a boxing group exercise class or a personal trainer to work one-on-one. Many health clubs in the MD/DC/VA area offer boxing as a group exercise and personal trainers who teach boxing.
